Last Sunday, 11 August, would have been the day that the country would have run out of food if we had only eaten British food from 1 January 2019.

That's why the NFU is calling on government to ensure our ability to produce food is not taken for granted and that British farmers are supported in their mission to feed the nation.

FOOD AND FARMING IN THE NEWS


News coverage over the last month has been dominated by the Conservative government's stance on a no-deal Brexit and the increasing focus on climate change.


NFU President Minette Batters has met with new Defra Secretary Theresa Villiers on her farm to discuss forging a positive future for farming and food production in this country 


Earlier this month, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) issued a global report into land use and its impact on the climate. Much of the media coverage focussed on changing diets and reducing meat consumption. The NFU expressed concern that the news coverage failed to mention that the carbon footprint of beef production in the UK is two and a half times lower than the global average and that animals play an important role in a balanced diet.
