OUR ICONIC UPLANDS

The hills and uplands are one of the most iconic farmed landscapes in the country. Not only do they provide us with beautiful landscapes, they also play a crucial role in producing high quality, safe and sustainable food for the nation on land that could otherwise not be used for food production.

In fact more than 40% of lamb in England and 75% of lamb in Wales is produced in the uplands.

FOOD AND FARMING IN THE NEWS

NFU President Minette Batters braved the rain at the launch of the Big Farmland Bird Count at her farm in Wiltshire this month, where she highlighted the importance of conserving bird species and  championed the great work our farmers do to protect and enhance the environment.

As the latest Commons vote on amendments to the withdrawal agreement unfolded, the NFU reacted by stressing the need for action from the Government to provide certainty around the future of food and farming in Britain.

Minette appeared live from her farm on the Sky News Sophy Ridge on Sunday programme to talk about how a no-deal Brexit would impact the quality of our food in the UK should the Government implement 0% import tariffs post-Brexit.

FARMERS: THE ORIGINAL FRIENDS OF THE EARTH

British farmers play a pivotal role in protecting and enhancing our natural  environment for future generations. The creation of woodland, hedgerows and field margins all provide environments which attract wildlife and encourage it to flourish.

Farmers have just completed their 2019 Big Farmland Birdcount. Last year 121 species of birds were recorded on British farms.
