FOOD AND FARMING IN THE NEWS

The weather has dominated the news agenda over the past few weeks, with the dry, hot conditions having an impact across all areas of agriculture. The NFU hosted an Agricultural Drought Summit to highlight the impact the drought is having on British food production.

Tuesday 7 August marked the notional day in the calendar when the British larder would run bare if we fed the nation only British food from 1 January. Defra figures for 2017 show that Britain produced 60% of its own food and this rate is in long-term decline.

New figures by the Rural Crime Network revealed that rural crime is on the rise. The NFU’s Deputy President Guy Smith was  featured in several news articles saying that action needs to be taken as it's one of the most pressing, impactful and devastating issues farmers are dealing with at the moment.
