WHAT'S IN SEASON?

The blackcurrant season is here and harvesting has begun. While all fruits are good for you, blackcurrants are particularly high in vitamin C and antioxidants. Currently, the most popular way we get our blackcurrant fix is by drinking Ribena, but there are lots of ways you can get your fix.

FOOD AND FARMING IN THE NEWS

The NFU has today launched a new service for farmers and the public to give information anonymously about rural crime, in partnership with the charity Crimestoppers. The “Rural Crime Reporting Line” is part of the NFU’s ongoing work to tackle the serious issues surrounding criminal behaviour on farms and in the wider countryside.

The NFU welcomed clarity on Government’s Brexit position. NFU’s President Minette Batters commented last Friday on the Government’s revised Brexit position post the Chequers meeting on Friday 6 July.

The dry weather has been a focus in recent weeks. NFU Deputy President Guy Smith featured in several outlets including the Mail Online, ITV News, BBC Radio 5 Live and The Guardian, where he outlined the effect on farmers.

2018 HARVEST ARRIVES EARLY

The dry weather over the past couple of months has meant many farmers are harvesting earlier than normal this year. The combine harvesters are out in the fields already, bringing in the UK’s 20 million tonnes of grain.
